Thousands expected at slain Ottawa policeman’s funeral

Thousands of police officers and emergency personnel are expected to attend the funeral Thursday for an Ottawa police officer stabbed to death while on duty last week.

Const. Eric Czapnik was sitting in his cruiser outside Ottawa’s Civic Hospital when he was stabbed. The married 51-year-old and father of four was rushed to hospital where he died.

Ottawa residents are expected to line the streets in Ottawa to pay respects to the fallen officer as police officers and civilians march behind Czapnik’s casket during the procession.

The service is expected to be the largest police memorial in Ottawa’s history with estimates suggesting more than 4,000 police officers from across North America will attend.

The Rogers Cable broadcast will include coverage of the funeral cortege as it makes its way from Carleton University (around 12 noon) to the Urbandale Centre at Lansdowne Park, prior to the service.

In Toronto and Scarborough, it will be broadcast on channels 10 and 63.
