Labour leaders are calling for a public inquiry, not just a scaffold safety blitz, to examine safety in the province’s underground economy.
It’s in light of the Christmas Eve scaffolding tragedy in which four men died.
At Queen’s Park, Labour Minister Peter Fonseca spoke to reporters for the first time since the tragedy and refused to call a public inquiry.
“I know there are a lot of questions, I have questions, the public has questions, and we want answers. So through this investigation by the Ministry of Labour, the Toronto police investigation, as well as the coroner’s inquest, I know that we will get answers to those questions,” Fonseca said.
He said inspectors will visit hundreds of construction sites in January to inspect scaffolds.
