January 2010: John Tory confirms he won’t run in Toronto’s mayor race

Former Ontario Conservative Leader John Tory has confirmed he will not be running for mayor of Toronto.

Instead, he will be taking the reigns of the Toronto City Summit Alliance.

Tory, now a talk show host at Toronto radio station CFRB, was defeated in his bid for mayor in 2003, losing to David Miller.

The race for mayor officially began Monday, with top Liberal organizer Rocco Rossi first out of the gate to declare his candidacy.

Former deputy premier George Smitherman gave up his provincial legislature seat on Sunday to pave the way for his bid to become mayor and is expected to officially declare his candidacy this week.

City councillor Giorgio Mammoliti filed his nomination on Tuesday and may be joined by another councillor, Adam Giambrone.

Candidates have until September 10 to file the necessary paperwork for the October 25 election.
