Boxing Day shoppers looking for deals

Canadians are filling mall parking lots and lining up at cash registers as the annual Boxing Day bargain hunt gets underway.

Retail analysts believe the annual blitz will be a big day for retailers, but add it could be tempered by online shopping and sales that have been going on since October and November.

Deloitte Canada analyst Duncan Stewart expects smartphones and netbooks will be big sellers in the technology sector this year.

Stewart says sales will be up compared to last year _ but that’s not saying much, given the horrible year retailers just had.

Retail analyst John Winter believes some of the effect of pre-Boxing Day deals will be offset by one trend that’s on the rise: people spending gift cards they received as presents.

He expects lower-price items like CDs and books will be the most popular because they give shoppers the better bang for the buck.
