ANTIGONISH, N.S. - Rebecca Martindale scored 3:17 into overtime for McGill as the Martlets opened up the Canadian women's university hockey championship with a 2-1 over the Montreal Carabins.

With the win, No. 1 seed McGill - the two-time defending CIS champions - extended its record winning streak to an astounding 85 games. Cathy Chartrand had the other goal for McGill, while Caroline Martin-Guay replied for Montreal.

On the winning goal, Martindale, a native of Kingston, Ont., beat Montreal netminder Catherine Herron high to the glove side to put McGill atop Pool A.

After a scoreless first period, the Martlets solved Herron at 18:38 of the second on the power play as Chartrand tipped in a point shot from Jordanna Peroff.

The Carabins tied things with a power-play goal of their own in the third. Martin-Guay tipped in a shot from Stephanie Daneau at 6:23 to give Montreal its first-ever goal in the CIS tournament.

Taylor Salisbury finished with nine saves in the McGill net to pick up the win, while Herron stood tall for Montreal, stopping 38 shots in defeat.

In late action Thursday, Leah Copeland scored the game's only goal in the first period on the power play as No. 3 Alberta upended No. 2 Laurier in Pool B action.

Dana Vinge made 17 saves for the shutout, while Liz Knox stopped 17 shots in defeat.
