Montreal Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey is resigning as the club's general manager after five seasons at the helm.
Gainey will stay on as a consultant to new Habs GM and executive vice-president Pierre Gauthier.
The team is currently in sixth place in the East, with a record of 28-26-6 despite a series of crippling long-term injuries to key players.
The team has been competitive under Gainey during the regular season, with a 241-176-46-7 record, but just an 11-22 won-loss record in four trips to the post-season.
The team has never advanced beyond the second round of the playoffs under Gainey's watch.
Gainey is a Hall of Fame winger who won five Stanley Cups during a 16-year career in Montreal and another as a general manager in Dallas in 1999.
