Argos expected to announce new ownership today

Peter Gross Feb 08, 2010 06:47:11 AM
The Toronto Argonauts are trying to escape from two seasons of turmoil, and the football team is expected to announce today, not only a new head coach, but new ownership.

It had been rumoured for several months that Argos owners David Cynamon and Howard Sokolowski were trying to sell the team and that appears to be the news today, with the team being bought by David Braley, who is also the owner of the B.C. Lions

Braley had previously lent Cynamon and Sokolowski as much as $1-million to keep the Argos running.

And while Braley will be in the unique position of owning a quarter of the league's teams, the Argos will be repatriating Jim Barker to coach the team.

This will be the second time Barker has returned to coach the Argos, the first time being in 1999.

Barker then coached the Argos to a 9-9 record.

Last season, the Argos were 3-15 under Bart Andrus after a 4-14 record the previous season.
