GLACE BAY, N.S. - A soldier described in his obituary as a proud Cape Bretoner who loved the Montreal Canadiens, baseball and rugby, was laid to rest on Friday.

The family of Sgt. James MacNeil sported red jerseys as they walked into the church for his funeral.

MacNeil was killed by a roadside bomb while on foot patrol in Afghanistan on June 20, barely 24 hours after he had become engaged to his girlfriend.

His death marks the first for a soldier from Cape Breton.

Another funeral will be held in Sudbury on Saturday for Pte. Andrew Miller, killed by a roadside bomb on June 26.
