Convicted Somali refugee ordered deported last fall arrested in Winnipeg

THE CANADIAN PRESS Mar 19, 2010 22:56:20 PM

WINNIPEG - A man who had been ordered out of Canada last fall has been arrested in Winnipeg.

Mohamed Said Jama, 39, was arrested Friday on an outstanding immigration warrant by Canada Border Services Agency and Winnipeg Police Service.

The Somali refugee was freed on statutory release from prison in 2008 after he was convicted of assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and robbery.

He was ordered deported to Somalia in 2008, was put on a plane last October, but he and his escorts were not allowed into Bosaso, Somalia, so he was returned to Winnipeg.

Jama was in custody until he was released by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada on Feb. 5, but failed to report to CBSA officials on March 3 and a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest.

A separate warrant was issued for Jama's arrest on Feb. 27 when Jama failed to comply with the conditions of his statutory release.

"I would like to congratulate the CBSA and Winnipeg Police Service on their co-operative efforts in apprehending Mohamed Said Jama," Vic Toews, minister of Public Safety, said in a news release.

"Mr. Jama has had a complete review of his removal, he's had a pre-removal risk assessment which he lost and he also appealed to the Federal Court and lost. The position of the government remains that Mr. Jama should be removed from Canada as soon as possible."
