Crowd gathered at Nathan Phillips Square to commemorate D-Day anniversary

A crowd gathered at Nathan Phillips Square to commemorate the 67th anniversary of D-Day, Monday.

Monday marks 67 years since thousands of Canadians stormed Juno Beach to help liberate Europe from the Nazis during the Second World War.

However, getting people to remember Canada's important contribution is not so simple.

Some say it's important to honour these average Canadians who were, for the most part, volunteers.

"And they did so because they thought it was important," Ted Barris, the author of "Juno: Canadians at D-Day," told 680News. "Because of that sacrifice, many lost their lives in these endeavours. But because they did what they did and did such extraordinary things, it's worth remembering the spirit of these people."

Barris said people must be constantly reminded so they don't forget.   

He said the more people know about what happened in the past, the more importance they'll place on it.
