ORANGEVILLE, Ont. - Ontario Provincial Police investigators said Wednesday a pair of men's work boots may be the key to solving the murder of 42-year-old Sonia Varaschin.
Investigators are looking for the men's size 10 or 11 boots after they found a footprint that may belong to the killer.
Police wouldn't say, however, where it was discovered.
OPP Const. Peter Leon said finding the work boots could crack the case wide open.
"Specifically a footwear impression, which was available through Mark's Work Wearhouse. It is a WindRiver product and it is very unique footwear impression that we're looking for."
Leon added the killer may have tossed the boots or bought new ones since Aug. 30.
Detectives would not reveal how Sonia died. They only said her killer worked alone and knows the area very well.
A $2,000 reward is being offered for information in connection with the case.
The OPP confirmed Tuesday human remains found in Caledon were those of Sonia and ruled her death a homicide.
On Sunday morning, a dog walker made the grisly discovery in a wooded area near Beech Grove Sideroad and Mountainview Road.
Her family was notified and have requested privacy as they deal with the tragic news.
Sonia was reported missing by her family on August 30 after she failed to show up to work.
Soon after police found blood in her Toyota Corolla that was left abandoned in an alleyway behind the Orangeville Town Hall. Blood was also found at her Spring Street townhouse.
Anyone with information is being urged to contact the Orangeville Police Service tip line at (519) 941-2522 (ext. 2211) or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
