BRADFORD, Ont. - A 24-year-old man from Orangeville, Ont., was killed after being struck by several vehicles after getting out of his car following a minor accident on Highway 400 Thursday night.
The northbound and southbound lanes of the 400 have reopened between Highway 9 and Highway 88. The highway was closed for the investigation.
The man was driving along southbound 400, near 88, at around 11:15 p.m. Thursday when he got into a minor accident with another vehicle and stopped his car on a live lane of traffic.
He ran to the median to exchange information with the other driver, and then tried to run back to his car -- which was parked on the southbound 400, south of 88 -- to turn on the hazard lights, when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle.
Due to the impact, the man was thrown over the centre median and into the northbound lanes. He was struck by several vehicles.
Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford is urging drivers and passengers to never run across lanes of traffic.
"You just stay in your vehicle. If you do get out of your vehicle because maybe it's in a bad location, get to a safe location yourself, wait for emergency vehicles, call 911, [...] you can't be wandering around on the highways," Woodford said.
