TORONTO, Ont. - Toronto Mayor David Miller is seeking compensation from the federal government for the vandalism that was inflicted on the city during the G20 summit over the weekend.
He reiterated Ottawa has to take responsibility because "it's not just the compensation for the damage; but [...] the compensation that concerns me even more is for people who were unable to work and those workers need their paychecks. They need them to pay the rent and put food on the table."
At the news conference, Monday, Miller also thanked Toronto police for their assistance during the G20 and said they acted with professionalism.
In addition, he called on Torontonians to put the violence and vandalism that marked the city behind them.
"The biggest message we can give to those people, those criminals who came to our city simply to commit violent acts, is to say we're putting you behind us, we are going to enjoy and thrive in our city."
Miller added he thought the situation would have been less volatile if the G20 was held at the Exhibition Place.
