Perimeters for the G20 security fence announced

John Stall May 28, 2010 23:50:10 PM

TORONTO, Ont. - A month before the G20 delegates come to town security has announced where the 10-foot high perimeter fences will be erected.

The security fence will stretch along King St, from Yonge Street, west to Blue Jays Way; South along Blue Jays Way until it reaches Spadina. It will continue south on Spadina until the Lakeshore, head east to Yonge, and back up to King Street.

The TTC has also announced streetcar service will be affected the weekend of the summit.

TTC says some streetcars will operate "closed door service".  This means that some streetcars, including the King car, will keep their doors closed and not allow people on or off the cars near the summit.

The TTC change of procedures are a part of the G20 security plan which will also see a perimeter fence go up around the summit.

The general public will be allowed inside the fence however they will be subjected to a security check and will have to have an explanations to why they need to enter the secured area.

According to The Toronto Star there will be three security zones surrounding the summit; a red zone only accessible by summit attendees and venue employees, the fenced security perimeter zone and an all traffic zone that will comprise the area from Yonge Street to Spadina Avenue and from King Street to Lake Ontario.

In the all traffic zone pedestrians will be free to enter however drivers will face a security check.

One residential building is located within the perimeters, although there are several residential locations around the borders. City councillor Adam Vaughan is currently working with the police and City officials to organize another public meeting for those living in the affected area.
