One Toronto mayoral candidate goes after another over gay comments

680News staff May 05, 2010 19:37:13 PM
Toronto mayoral candidates squared off, Wednesday, in the first major debate.

However, it seemed more like a war of words between front runner George Smitherman and Rob Ford.

The Star.com reported Smitherman went straight for Ford's political throat as he said comments Ford made in the past about gays make him unfit to lead the city.

Smitherman - who was Ontario's first openly gay cabinet minister - also criticized Ford for comments he made about aids funding.

In 2006, Ford told city council "if you are not doing needles and you are not gay, you wouldn't get aids probably."

Ford did not apologize for, or try to explain the remarks.
