Toronto police warn of some moving companies defrauding customers

680News staff Mar 19, 2010 14:25:46 PM
TORONTO, Ont. - Toronto police have issued a warning about some moving companies that are ripping off customers.

The companies usually advertise in local papers, free newspapers, and the Internet.

They'll quote a very low cost and make the client sign a contract, asking for a deposit before any of the work has been done.

Then as they're halfway through the job, the movers suddenly demand more money.

If the client refuses to pay, the movers threaten to keep their stuff in storage or unload it all into the street until they receive their money.

Police said people should try to use a company that's been recommended by a friend, read contracts thoroughly, ask for references, and beware of deals that seem to good to be true.
