TORONTO, Ont. - February is Black History Month in Canada and the United States.
In Toronto, the city is inviting the public to explore and celebrate the heritage, traditions and culture of African-Canadians.
The month began as a week in 1926 and was formally celebrated in the 1960s.
In 1979, Toronto became the first municipality in Canada to proclaim Black History Month.

Below is a list of events in the city during Black History Month in February:
- Toronto Public Library - "Makers of Black History in Canada talks and Rita Cox Black and Caribbean Heritage Collection.
- "Finding Freedom: The Joshua Glover Story" - Montgomery's Inn (4709 Dundas St. W.), Feb. 24, 7-9 p.m., $20 plus HST; includes snacks, refreshments and a tour of the Inn. Pre-registration required.
- Mackenzie House (82 Bond St.) - Learn more about the early Black community in Toronto, including those who published newspapers. Saturdays and Sundays in February, noon to 5 p.m. Admission: adults ($5.71 plus HST), seniors/youth ($2.62 plus HST), children ($2.38 plus HST). Call 416-392-6915 to make a booking.
- "Underground Railroad: The William Still Story" - Fort York (250 Fort York Blvd.), Feb. 11, 2 p.m.
