City planners consider separate bike lanes on University Avenue

University Avenue could be the latest downtown street to have bike lanes installed, but drivers are hoping the city puts the brakes on the plan.

It is perhaps the most attractive downtown street for city planners to install bicycle lanes. It is wider than other streets, so there's room to even mark off separate lanes for bicycles.

Bicycle advocates are pushing hard for bigger and safer bike lanes, saying the city isn't moving fast enough to create a bike-friendly environment throughout the entire city.

But drivers are not keen on losing more room along major traffic arteries.
