Slippery sidewalks, roads due to overnight freeze

TORONTO, Ont. - It could be a messy drive or walk to work and school Wednesday morning.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for much of southern Ontario, including the GTA, warning of patchy freezing rain and light snow in some areas.

An overnight freeze and freezing drizzle have created some very slippery sidewalks and walkways.

"We're not under any watches or warnings from Environment Canada, but this special weather statement just as a heads up again, extra care and caution needed. Untreated road surfaces and especially sidewalks extremely slippery this morning," 680News meteorologist Jill Taylor said.

Toronto Transportation Services has been out salting the roads since temperatures started to fall Tuesday night.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford is warning drivers to take it slow even if you have snow tires on your vehicle.

"Sometimes in icy conditions, the winter tires don't react as if they would because the winter tires are mainly for pavement, so that they can stick to the pavement better so that you don't lose control, especially in snow, but sometimes with ice, you don't have that control," Sgt. Woodford said.

If you start to slide, he said to look and steer in the direction you want to go, but don't slam on your brakes.
