Some holiday shoppers are saying "bring back the bell" after learning Salvation Army donation collectors are being silenced inside the Eaton Centre.

The no-jingle agreement was put in place almost a decade ago to stop the sound of bells from irritating shoppers. Many people in the holiday crowd at the mall are calling it anti-Christmas.

Peter is a Sally Ann worker collecting donations at the Yonge/Bloor Centre just outside the subway station. He says he gets ring his bell when ever he feels like it.

"We don't get complaints at all," Peter explained. "A lot of people that give ... they actually like the sound of the bells."

A spokesperson from Cadilliac Fairview said he has been receiving hate mail about the policy and some customers threatening to boycott the mall.
