TORONTO, Ont. - Health Canada is warning people not to get the Brazilian Blowout, the new expensive salon treatment which tames curls and frizz.
The Public Health Agency did some testing and found the Brazilian Blowout solution contains 12 per cent formaldehyde.
Canadian regulations state only 0.2 per cent of formaldehyde is allowed for use as a preservative in cosmetics.
Health Canada has received complaints about burning eyes, nose and throat, and one woman said she lost her hair after getting the treatment.
The chemical can cause cancer if inhaled over a long period of time, so stylists would be most at risk.
The California company that makes the Brazilian Blowout insists the product is safe and calls the formaldehyde levels miniscule.
