Toronto police unveils community messaging system
Toronto - Toronto police launched a new messaging system, Friday, designed to get vital information out to the public faster.
TPSlinks, the new community notification system, allows people to register for alerts about things such as road closures, school lockdowns and evacuation orders.
Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair said if you sign up and "[...] there's a crime issue that's going on in your neighbourhood, you can expect a message from us telling you what's going on [...]."
Meantime, a spokesperson with HipLink, the company that created the system, added TPSlinks can even "[...] send one message to one house."
Messages will be transmitted via landline or cell phone.
Although, police will be cautious about sending messages out too late, Blair did explain "only in emergency situations would other types of information go out in the middle of the night."
Police have promised information they are given will not be used in any investigation.
Those that sign up for the notifications can create a user profile and customize which messages they want to receive.
The following are examples of message types TPSlinks will send:
- Special events
- Community meetings
- Road closures
- School lockdowns
- Critical incidents
- Missing person notifications
- Citizen evacuations
- Suspicious person notifications
