Body of latest Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan returns today
Trenton, Ont. - The body of the latest Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan will arrive at CFB Trenton later Tuesday.
Sapper Steven Marshall, 24, was killed Friday by an improvised explosive device.
His family called Marshall a "soldier's soldier," and that he died doing what he loved.
He is the 133 Canadian soldier to die during the Afghan mission.
The repatriation ceremony for the Calgary native is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean and Defence Minister Peter MacKay will be among the dignitaries on hand for the ceremony.
Marshall's body will then be taken along the Highway of Heroes to Toronto, where an autopsy will be performed.
The procession is expected to reach Cobourg at about 3:30 p.m., Oshawa at around 4:15 p.m., Scarborough about 15 minutes later and the Don Valley Parkway at around 5 p.m. NOTE: these are approximate times.
In Toronto, the hearse will drive down Jarvis Street, before taking Wellesley Street to get to Bay Street and the coroner's office.
The Ontario Provincial Police is asking drivers not to stop on the shoulder of the 401 when the procession goes by. For those who wish to pay their respects, drivers are asked to pull off the highway and find a safe spot to stop.
