Scotland

ScotlandWhether you're looking for wide-open spaces, with emerald green grasslands and craggy mountains; or your looking for the hustle and bustle of metropolitan cities, Scotland has something to satisfy you. We've compiled 5 of the top reasons to visit bonny Scotland.

1. Pubs
The Scottish have perfected the pub experience, which is no wonder since they've been at it since the early 1300's. Whether you're having a night on the town, or just out for lunch, there is nowhere you'll get a better Scottish experience than a local pub. Enjoy a game of darts, or some conversation over a quiet pint. There's no better or livelier place to watch a football match; even if you're not a fan, you can help but get caught up in the excitement. And while you're there, be sure to try one of the visiting ales. These are specialty ales that the pub only offers for a short time, so get one while they last.

2. History
Scotland is very much rich in history and local lore; every town and village has it's own local history. There is too much to describe in this article, but here are a few starting points. The William Wallace monument, located near Stirling, is a great place to learn about the real William Wallace, and step back into Scotland's turbulent past. Visit any of the castles, and you're in for as much history as you can handle; these places have seen everything; insurrection and revolt, love and marriage, happiness and tragedy. One of the most stunning castles in Scotland is Eilean Donan Castle in the Scottish Highlands. Where ever you visit, be sure to take some time to learn just whose footsteps you might be walking in.

3. People
The Scots are among some of the most welcoming and inviting people around. Whether you're having a blether (a chat) over a pint in the pub or asking for directions, you're sure to receive a warm greeting. It's not all kilts and broadswords though, so don't be surprised to find metropolitan people in Edinburgh and Glasgow. If you're interested in showing your Scottish side while you're away, you can buy yourself a kilt, for a pretty penny, at one of the local kilt shops; some will even send your finished garment to you via the post.

4. Scenery
Walking down the cobbled streets of St. Andrews, you can marvel at one of the world's oldest Universities, take in the ancient buildings where modern day students study Politics, Physics or Ancient English. Next, take a stroll down the stone stairway to Castle Sands, a small beach overlooked by the ruins of St. Andrews Castle. If you're feeling very brave, you can take a dip in the bracing North Sea waters. Take the time to look for the elusive Nessie at Loch Ness and wander through the ruins of Urquhart Castle. No matter where you are in the country, photo possibilities are endless. Make sure to take a few extra flash cards.

5. Whiskey
Even if you're not an aficionado, it is worth it to take a whiskey tour just for the sheer variety and uniqueness that is provided by one of the world's foremost whiskey producing countries. These tours are a great way to introduce yourself not only to some of the world's best whiskey, but if you're willing to invest a few days on an in-depth tour, it's a great way to see Scotland. Tours range from short tasting sessions at local whiskey shops, to multiple day distillery tours.
