City Council votes to rid lane on Jarvis St. in favour of bikes
It could become an election issue, that's what some city councillors are vowing after council voted on Monday to approve a plan to remove the "reversible" centre lane on Jarvis St. and build new bike lanes instead.
The city council voted 28-16 in favour of reducing the number of car lanes from five to four. The plan would increase commute time by about two minutes.
680News spoke to some commuters who were not impressed, one man said, "I work down on Jarvis and with that one lane closed, it adds on way more then two minutes. I don't believe it."
The plan could be in place later this year, the city now has to file the plan with the provincial government who has to approve it.
According to Mayor David Miller, people deserve to be able to walk and bike safely down Jarvis St. because transportation is not about moving cars, it's about moving people.
