When I was young, I'd huddle under the sheets with a Heathkit transistor
radio my brothers built, the volume turned down low so no one knew I was still
awake. I would angle it left and right, hoping to catch a signal in the darkness
from someplace far, far away...like Buffalo.
I can't count the number of times I'd fall asleep while listening to dramas
such as The Shadow, Dr. Kildare or The Green Hornet
late Sunday nights. I loved radio, it was magical. Yet, radio in 'my room' was
very different from what my parents tuned into. Every radio they owned was
'glued' to the same station and the news was always on. Among all the booming
male announcers of the time, there was one woman. I listened to her everyday
when I came home for lunch from school, The Betty Kennedy Show. I
remember eating my grilled cheese and thinking...I'd like to do what she does –
talk with people on the radio.
