City splash pads open this weekend

The city of Toronto has had a change of heart and decided to turn back on the water at most of their nearly 100 splash pads as the summer temperatures continue to heat up.

“We have decided to reprioritize work and delay closure due to the unseasonably warm temperatures,” Matthew Cutler, a spokesperson for Parks, Forestry and Recreation, told CityNews in an email.

Only a handful of splash pads have reportedly been closed off.

The city said it will delay any further closures until at least Monday, meaning the majority of the splash pads will remain open for the weekend.

“Some of the splash pads, particularly in the Toronto/East York area of the city have had their electrical timers shut off, but are otherwise still in worker order,” Cutler’s email read.

“Staff will reset the timers tomorrow morning to ensure they are functioning for the weekend.”

The city’s splash pads usually close on the third weekend in September.

City workers began that process this weekend, including a “final inspection, clearing the pipes of water, shutting down and winterizing filtration systems and shutting down electrical systems.”

The splash pads will operate daily between 9 a.m to 8:30 p.m.
