Head of TTC clashes with Mayor Ford over transit plan

There is dissent in the transit ranks at Toronto City Hall.

Mayor Rob Ford's push to kill the previous administration's Transit City plan is facing some significant opposition from TTC Chair Karen Stintz and a large group of city councillors.

Stintz and 23 other city councillors have requested a special meeting be held on Wednesday to clarify the city's position on transit.

Prior to Ford becoming mayor, council approved light-rail lines for Eglinton, Finch and Sheppard. Stintz said it's time to move ahead with the projects that are already on the books.

"We all want light-rail transit in the city to get people home sooner," she said.

She said her opinions are founded on fiscal responsibility and sound transit planning.

Stintz added that going against Ford means her days as head of the TTC are likely numbered.

"I will ask my colleagues to confirm those light-rail projects that are currently on the books and fully funded," Stintz said.

Those projects include $8.4 billion already approved for light-rail on Eglinton, Sheppard, Finch and the Scarborough RT

Coun. Josh Matlow isn't worried about a negative reaction from the mayor.

"This isn't about the mayor, this is about Toronto, that's why we're doing this," Matlow explained.

However, Stintz said the mayor has made it clear that he wants someone else to take over the job as chair of the TTC.

Rising to Stintz's defence, Coun. Glenn De Baeremaeker said despite the mayor's plan, subways are not always the better option

"I think this motion also saves the city from going bankrupt undergrounding one small line, what we need is mass transit for the masses in the City of Toronto," De Baeremaeker said.

Taking a look at the whole situation, deputy mayor Doug Holyday says he is concerned.

"Council might act in haste and make a decision without all the information before them," Holyday said. "And of course, decisions made in haste usually make waste."

Rising to his brother's defence, Coun. Doug Ford calls Stintz's move a personal attack against the mayor.

"The mayor was the only individual down here that had a very clear mandate from the people of Toronto to build Subways," Doug Ford said.

Meanwhile, Coun. Norm Kelly says the chair of the TTC is handpicked by the mayor and typically follows his lead.

"Could you have imagined (former TTC chair Adam) Giambrone giving the finger to Miller?" Kelly asked.

Coun. Joe Mihevic is one of the total 24 councillors supporting the light-rail plans, and he says no matter what the result, Stintz is standing up for the taxpayers.

"She's not towing the line that the mayor is really pushing hard to have her tow," Mihevic said. "To speak truth to power is brave."
