Councillor Mammoliti says Toronto should be own province

TORONTO, Ont. - City Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti wants Toronto to secede from Ontario and become its own province.

He told the Toronto Sun he is frustrated federal and provincial governments aren't doing enough for municipalities.

He maintained if Toronto was a province it would qualify for transfer payments from Ottawa.

This isn't the first time the idea of an independent Toronto has surfaced.

Former mayor Mel Lastman made a similar suggestion in 1999, but within a year admitted secession was not possible under the Canadian Constitution.
