Top Twitter moments from #CityVote: The Debate

By News Staff

It was the most watched election-related event ever live-streamed on Twitter Canada.

Tens of thousands of viewers logged onto the social media site Monday night to watch Kathleen Wynne, Doug Ford and Andrea Horwath battle it out in #CityVote: The Debate.

According to analytics from Twitter Canada, Hydro One was most tweeted about issue.

That’s not surprising considering the province-wide furor over sky-high hydro bills, and the controversy surrounding President and CEO Mayo Schmidt’s $6.2 million in salary and bonuses.

Ford referred to Schmidt several times throughout the debate, calling him the “$6-million dollar man” and chiding Wynne for allowing such excess on her watch.

Safe injection sites and opioids were the second most tweeted about issue, as Ontario grapples with an increasingly deadly addiction crisis.

The third most tweeted about topic was public transit — a common gripe among commuters, especially in the dense core of downtown Toronto.

The most tweeted about moment came when Ford, Wynne and Horwath offered their final thoughts and made a last appeal to voters, with Wynne touting her accomplishments, Ford promising to protect taxpayers, and Horwath reminding Ontarians that they have a third option.

Ford was mentioned the most in tweets at 55 per cent, followed by Wynne at 33 per cent and Horwath at 12 per cent.

So who won the debate?

One viewer declared a unanimous winner — the CityNews TTC chime that was used as an auditory cue to mark the end of a question period.

Now here’s a compilation of political jabs from Monday’s debate.
