Suspicious package outside of ACC a plastic grenade replica: police

By News Staff and The Canadian Press

Toronto police have rendered a suspicious package near the Air Canada Centre safe on Friday night

Police were called about a suspicious package at one of the arena’s entrances just before 6 p.m.

The Toronto Raptors, who were preparing to play the Dallas Mavericks, tweeting out that Gates 5 and 6 were being closed as a precaution, which delayed entry into the game for some fans. At no point was the game stopped or disrupted.

Officers, paramedics, firefighters and members of the force’s chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear explosives team arrived at the scene and closed off an area including Maple Leaf Square where fans typically congregate during playoff games for the Raptors and Maple Leafs.

Shortly after 8 p.m., a loud bang was heard and police confirmed they had rendered the package safe.

Police confirmed the item in question looked like a grenade but turned out to be a plastic replica.

Police said the investigation is continuing but there appears to be no criminal intent at this point and time.
