Former Toronto slaughterhouse up for redevelopment

A former slaughterhouse west of downtown Toronto is up for redevelopment, according to a city staff report released last month.

The land at 2 Tecumseth St. and 125 Niagara St. was previously occupied by Toronto Abattoir and Quality Meat Packers. The business closed in 2014.

According to the staff report, the proposal development includes 91,347 square metres of residential, office and retail space that includes six buildings. The development would include 651 residential units.

“The proposed buildings include a 38-storey mixed-use tower, a 15-storey mixed-use building, and an 11-storey office and retail building proposed atop the retained two-storey frame of a building within the former abattoir facility,” the report reads.

Back in August of 2014, council approved the South Niagara Planning Strategy, which includes the land bordered by Bathurst Street, Strachan Avenue, Wellington Street West and the Metrolinx rail corridor. The proposed development is located within that area.

An open house and a community meeting will be held on March 22 at the Fort York National Historic Site.

Currently, there are four buildings located on the property, including the former Toronto Municipal Abattoir building. The rest of the buildings are proposed to be demolished.
