SIU investigating after police dog bites genitals of suspected car thief

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a police dog bit the genitals of a suspected car thief, who was caught after a nine-kilometre chase and crash.

Just before midnight on Tuesday, Durham police spotted a car in Oshawa that had allegedly been stolen in Toronto. When police tried to stop the vehicle, the driver took off.

Police chased the vehicle west on Highway 401 and it collided with a cruiser at Highway 412.

Three boys bailed from the car and tried to run away, but they were caught soon after.

One of the suspects was taken to hospital after a police dog bit him in the genital area during the arrest.

A Durham police officer was also bitten by the dog and had minor injuries.

A 17-year-old and two 15-year-olds from Toronto face numerous charges, including possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

They were all held for a bail hearing.

NOTE: Durham police originally said there were two suspects.
