Risk of freezing rain, icy conditions for Friday

By News Staff

The wet roads could soon turn to ice rinks as the relatively balmy temperatures turn frigid by Friday evening.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Toronto and the GTA warning of the potential for icy conditions.

“Rain is forecast to change to snow Friday as temperatures plummet with the passage of a cold front,” said the weather agency.

“There may also be a brief period of freezing rain during the changeover from rain to snow.”

680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor said showers will continue until around 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. and then change to freezing rain around noon. Snow is expected to arrive at 2 p.m. and last until 6 p.m. — around three centimetres of snow is possible.

The GTA started the day at 12 C but the temperature will fall to -14 by the evening with a windchill near -27.

Meanwhile, Thursday was the warmest Jan. 11 on record in Toronto. The mercury reached 12.4 C at Pearson International Airport, which snapped the previous high of 11.7 C set in 1975.
