Toronto considering Port Lands expansion for film industry

By News Staff

City council will be considering a proposal Tuesday to expand space in the Port Lands for the film and television industry.

Actor Kiefer Sutherland made his case for more space in a video filmed on the Toronto set of his show “Designated Survivor.”

Sutherland directs his message at Mayor John Tory and city councillors, asking them “to say yes to the Port Lands planning framework and ensure that Toronto remains a film-friendly city.”

A study of the film studios in the Port Lands says that there is need for more space for studio production in Toronto, calling the Port Lands a “key location for Toronto’s on-screen industry.”

The study notes that the streets in the area are capable of accommodating new studios.

The study was undertaken by Hemson Consulting Inc. and presented to the Toronto Film, Television and Digital Media Board at its meeting on Aug. 25.
