Toronto’s first transgender job fair promises inclusive workforce

By News Staff

Touted as a Canadian-first, the Trans Workforce job fair debuted in Toronto on Monday. Organizers say the job fair was a necessary step toward bridging the gap to improve diversity in the workplace.

The job fair’s founder Biko Beauttah said she created the it to help those who may be having a hard time finding work.

“I asked myself what’s wrong,” she said. “I’m educated nine years post secondary education [and] through my own lived experience I had so much trouble finding work.”

Martin Gallagher, a transgender college student attending the fair, said the job fair is a step in the right direction; as many people in the transgender community have experienced discrimination.

“I’ve put myself out there a few times and to be honestly, I’ve seen my resume go in the trash,” Gallagher said. “It’s a sad thing to think about but I worry a lot about being attacked or just being shunned in general.”

Sharon Chung with TD Bank’s LGBT Talent Acquisition says the company welcomes talented candidates, regardless of what gender they identify with.

“We’re always happy to support the LGBT community in diversity and inclusion but were also here to find talent,” she said. “There’s so much great talent out there from underrepresented groups. We want to make sure our workforce is reflective of the community.”
