No charges against police in pursuit crash during Amber Alert investigation: SIU

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The province’s police watchdog says no charges will be laid against an officer after a crash in which a child and a man were injured during an Amber Alert investigation.
The Special Investigations Unit says a 35-year-old man and a four-year-old girl, who was allegedly abducted in Aurora, Ont., were seriously injured when the van they were in went off the road at high speed and rolled in Pembroke, Ont.
The SIU says provincial police had spotted the suspect vehicle in a York Region Amber Alert in the Bancroft, Ont., area on April 18, 2016, and a pursuit began after they were unable to pull the van over.
The agency says the pursuit was called off after speeds reached 178 kilometres per hour, but OPP continued to monitor the van’s progress.
The SIU says it was approximately 130 kilometres from the point where the officer ended his pursuit to the curve where the van crashed a hour later while travelling at least 126 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
SIU director Tony Loparco says he could find no causal connection between the short-lived police pursuit and the crash.
