Homes evacuated after CN train carrying crude oil derails north of Edmonton

By News Staff and The Canadian Press

A number of people were briefly evacuated from their homes in area north of Edmonton following a CN train derailment.

A total of 46 homes in two neighbourhoods in Sturgeon County were evacuated as a precaution, however, everyone was allowed to return home a few hours later.

RCMP Const. Kathleen Fossen says a total of 12 cars derailed on the southbound train on Sunday afternoon.

CityNews Edmonton reports crude oil was leaking from two of the cars and a total of 30 to 50 litres of oil had leaked into the environment

CN spokesman Patrick Waldron says there’s no reports of the oil leaking into a waterway.

“We have personnel on the scene working with emergency responders, and more resources are being mobilized to continue that response and complete a full assessment of the incident,” Waldron said by phone earlier on Sunday.

There were no reports of injuries.

CN says environmental teams are on the scene to begin a clean-up.

The railway says the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
