Toronto police protest is over, union head confirms

Toronto police have ended a protest that saw them wearing union ball caps instead of their uniform hats.
The head of the union said Thursday the protest was over.
Mike McCormack, the president of the Toronto Police Association, said the goal was public awareness, and that goal was accomplished.
Officers were wearing caps with “TPA” on the front to protest what the union called insufficient staffing levels.
McCormack alleged that the Toronto Police Services Board reneged on a promise to hire 80 new officers.
But Toronto Police chief Mark Saunders and Mayor John Tory said work is already well underway to hire those officers.
McCormack said Thursday that he was seeing promotions and communications personnel hired, under-staffing would be addressed, and call backs and overtime would be approved.
