Alert issued due to risk of funnel clouds in GTA

Environment Canada has issued a weather advisory for the GTA and most of Southern Ontario about the risk of funnel clouds.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected Thursday afternoon and early evening, creating conditions that favour funnel clouds and waterspouts, the agency says.

Funnel clouds are not normally a danger near the ground, but it’s possible they could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

“Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously,” the alert says. “Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.”

Environment Canada says some of the thunderstorms will also bring dime-sized hail, wind gusts up to 70 km/h and lightning.

The advisory covers Toronto, and the regions of York, Peel, Halton and Durham, as well as Hamilton and Barrie.
