Body found near Little Italy neighbourhood deemed a homicide

By News Staff

Homicide detectives are investigating the discovery of a body in the area of Bathurst and College streets.

Paramedics were called to an area on Lippincott Street on Sunday morning after the owner of Aunties & Uncles, a popular brunch spot in the neighbourhood, says one of his employees discovered a man in his 20s hunched over on nearby patio.

When she went over to check on the man, she discovered he was bloody and unresponsive. A doctor who happens to live in the area came by and found the victim had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the lower back.

Homicide Det. Shawn Mahoney says an autopsy will be conducted Monday to determine the exact cause of death, adding the victim showed obvious signs of trauma.

Mahoney says they have tentatively identified the victim but have yet to contact the next of kin.

Police would not speculate if this was a random or targeted attack at this point.

No suspect description has been released but officers are currently looking at surveillance footage in the area for more information.

This is Toronto’s 33rd homicide of the year.
