Man arrested in hate-related assault in Whitby

Durham Regional Police have arrested a 57-year-old man in connection with a hate-related assault against a Muslim man in Whitby last weekend.

Police say a 22-year-old man was in a washroom at Heydenshore Park last Saturday night when he was approached by another man. The suspect allegedly made several hate-related threats towards him before punching him and then fleeing on a bicycle.

The victim suffered minor injuries.

Police have arrested and charged William Carnahan of no fixed address with assault.
