Ripley’s Aquarium reopens after power outage

By News Staff

One of Toronto’s busiest tourist attractions has finally reopened after a power outage early Thursday morning.

Officials said the power went out around 5 a.m. at the Ripley’s Aquarium, forcing it to keep its doors closed for the morning and most of the afternoon. By 1 p.m., employees had turned away about 6,000 tourists.

The aquarium’s general manager Peter Doyle told 680 NEWS the animals are okay.

“We have a full backup generator to maintain the water quality and life support systems,” he explained “Our animal health is paramount so we do have that covered with the backup generator but we can’t open to the public unless we have full power for lights and auxiliary lights.”

Doyle said they had been in contact with Toronto Hydro most of the day, getting updates on when power would be restored.

Operations were back to normal as of 3:15 p.m. and the aquarium we will be open until 11 p.m. this evening.

It’s believed the power outage stemmed from a distribution line heading into the aquarium.
