2 Canadian Cavalia employees detained in Beijing over pot use: report

By News Staff

Global Affairs Canada says it is providing consular services for two Canadians detained in Beijing, but won’t confirm whether it’s because they were smoking marijuana.

According to the CBC, police went to a hotel where employees with the Montreal-based equestrian show Cavalia were staying and tested members of the technical team for pot use on July 14.

They arrested two Quebec residents and others, but CBC could only confirm the pair had been imprisoned and face deportation.

“Consular officials are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information,” Global Affairs spokeswoman Natasha Nystrom said in an email.

“Due to privacy considerations, we are unable to provide further information on this matter.”

Cavalia hasn’t responded to a request for comment.
