Hwy. 400 reopens near Bradford after dangerous goods spill

By News Staff and The Canadian Press

A stretch of Highway 400 near Bradford was shut down Thursday after a crash involving a tractor-trailer spilled a dangerous substance on the road.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the tractor-trailer and another vehicle collided north of Canal Road around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Emergency crews determined the truck was carrying dangerous goods and a small amount of cleaning solution-type material began leaking.

Hazmat units from Bradford West Gwillimbury and Barrie fire departments assessed the situation and found two containers inside the truck were leaking.

The OPP were concerned the crash could have lead to a greater spill or possibly a fire due to the highly flammable nature of the materials.

Vehicles trapped between Canal Road and Highway 88 were evacuated and northbound traffic was forced off at Highway 9. The affected lanes have since reopened.
