Poll shows provincial Liberals inching their way back up

By News Staff

A new poll shows while the provincial Liberals are still lagging behind when it comes to support, the gap between them and the Progressive Conservatives is getting smaller.

According to The Innovative Research Group poll, 30 percent of those asked would vote Conservative if an election were held today. However, 27 percent say they would cast a ballot for the Liberals. Even among decided voters, the gap remains razor thin with 39 percent saying they would vote PC and 35 percent for the Liberals.

Liberal leader Kathleen Wynne continues to be a polarizing figure, however, her favourability has begun to rebound in the last few months. While the poll shows a net favourability rating of -34 percent it is actually an eight point improvement from her all-time low of -42 percent back in February.

PC leader Patrick Brown’s favourability rating has improved slightly but more than half of Ontarians say they still don’t recognize his name.

Liberals continue to remain popular across most of the GTA but the Conservatives continue to be strong everywhere else across the province. Northern Ontario is shaping up to be a key battleground as the PC’s and NDP are in a virtual tie with the Liberals not far behind.

When it comes to the question of which party leader would make the best premier, Brown is the choice of 23 percent of those asked with NDP leader Andrea Horwath at 18 percent while Wynne garners just 15 percent support.
