Longtime City of Toronto employee Jim Hart has been appointed the new councillor for Ward 44 in Scarborough.

“I can’t wait to get down here back to the place I love to work and work with all these folks again,” he said.

Hart claimed the vacant seat after receiving the majority of votes (27) in council on Wednesday. He also had the support of Mayor John Tory who released a statement following the appointment.

Former councillor and mayoral candidate, David Soknacki, was also in the running, but received just nine votes.

Hart takes over from Ron Moeser, who passed away in April after a battle with lymphoma.

Moeser represented his constituents first as a councillor in the former city of Scarborough and then as Ward 44 councillor following amalgamation in 1998.

He also served on the Toronto and Region Conservation board, City-School Boards Advisory Committee, Economic Development Committee and Scarborough Community Council.

Hart said he plans to keep championing several items that were important to Moeser.

“The Port Union waterfront trail is a big one, there’s actually a public meeting tonight on it that I’ll be going to later. Port Union Road is huge. There’s some parks projects in the ward as well that I want to get a handle on and keep working on. There’s lots of redevelopment in the ward, there’s a few planning projects, so there’s lots to do.”

“It’s an exciting ward. What I love about the ward is it’s green, it’s beautiful and I want to keep it that way.”
