Damage pegged at $2M in 5-alarm fire at downtown noodle bar

By News Staff

Fire officials have pegged the damage in Friday’s five-alarm fire that destroyed a noodle restaurant at more than $2 million.

The blaze broke out around 1:30 p.m. at Ryus Noodle Bar on Baldwin Street, near Dundas Street West and University Avenue, and quickly spread to the attic and adjoining buildings.

Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said four units with a connecting roof were damaged.

“This type of structure poses some unique challenges because there’s one roof structure across … so once the fire breaches up into the attic, it has a relatively uninhibited path across all four (units),” he explained. “Very, very tough for our crews to get at.”

No one was injured in the fire which, at its height, saw as many as 25 trucks and 100 fire fighters engaged in containing the blaze.

Fire crews remained on the scene Saturday as they continue to investigate the cause of the blaze.
