Mississauga residents on edge after rash of car break-ins

Residents in a Mississauga neighbourhood are concerned about a rash of car break-ins in the area near Hurontario Street and the Queensway — one of which was captured on security video.

Bianca Ditella said she woke up Tuesday morning to find her car window smashed in.

“My whole glass was shattered,” she explained. “I feel violated. I’m upset. I don’t know what I did to people. It’s heartbreaking.”

Ditella, who lives in a detached home with her parents, said the incident was captured on the family’s surveillance cameras. The footage shows someone walking onto their driveway, pulling the door handles of several parked vehicles, and then forcing his way into one.

Ditella said it’s the second time someone has broken into her car since April.

“It’s shocking. You feel very unsafe,” Bianca’s mother said. “It doesn’t matter that we have a camera, that we have lights. They don’t care.”

The Ditellas said they reported both break-ins to Peel police, adding they aren’t the only ones who have been targeted. Their neighbours have also reported break-ins in the last year.

“Somebody broke the glass and they took the stuff from inside, like my phone and laptop,” Mohamed Ahmed told CityNews.

Ahmed, who lives next door to the Ditellas, said the break-in happened last year, a little after midnight.

“I told the police right away, ‘He made a big mess inside the car. At least come and check for fingerprints,’” he explained.

Another area resident Jane Khan said in March, someone forced their way into her brother’s vehicle. And her boyfriend, who lives next door to the Ditellas, had his car broken into last year.

Peel police said they are currently investigating the Ditellas’ reports, but it’s too early to tell whether the break-ins are connected.
