Peel cruiser involved in crash for 3rd time in a week

By News staff

Peel police say they are committed to safety after the third crash in about a week involving their cruisers.

They say a two-car crash involving a cruiser at Queen Street East and Hansen Road in Brampton on Wednesday morning was indirectly linked to a dump truck collision down the street.

Around 5:40 a.m., police were called to Clark Boulevard and Rutherford Road South after a dump truck knocked over three hydro poles and brought down power lines. Hydro was knocked out in the area, including the traffic lights where the cruiser and sedan collided.

The crashes happened within minutes of each other. Police continue to investigate.

Meanwhile, no charges have been laid in a five-vehicle chain-reaction crash in Brampton that involved a police cruiser on Saturday night.

It happened just after 10 p.m. at Hurontario Street and Steeles Avenue. Police say surveillance video in the area is being reviewed as part of the investigation.

And the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) continues to probe the circumstances surrounding a more serious crash that happened on May 17 in Brampton.

A Peel cruiser was involved in a three-vehicle collision on Main Street North near Vodden, sending an officer and a 17-year-old female driver to hospital with serious injuries. Both are expected to be OK.

Peel Regional Police Sgt. Josh Colley says road safety is a high priority for the service.

“We’re not immune from being involved in accidents,” he said. “Our people are held at a higher standard, and if our officers are deemed at fault, they’re held accountable through the Highway Traffic Act, as well as the Police Services Act.

“We have to lead by example in order to assure road safety.”
